# TANRAIL ONE — Phase 2 Security & Architecture Audit

## A. Scope of Audit
A rigorous test-driven audit of the Phase 2 Identity, Organization, Business Unit, Branch, and Contextual RBAC implementation.

## B. Files Inspected
- `app/Domains/Core/Models/*` (User, Role, Permission, Organization, BusinessUnit, Branch)
- `app/Domains/Core/Traits/HasContextualRoles.php`
- `app/Domains/Core/Http/Controllers/ContextController.php`
- `app/Domains/Core/Http/Middleware/EnsureActiveContext.php`
- `database/migrations/*` (Phase 2 core tables)
- `tests/Feature/Phase2FoundationTest.php`
- `tests/Feature/SecurityAuditTest.php`

## C. Security Findings
The application boundary was explicitly tested against malicious payload manipulation, resulting in the discovery of critical hierarchical evaluation gaps in the original Phase 2 implementation.

## D. Database Integrity Findings
Database integrity is robust. `role_user` correctly utilizes an `index(['scope_type', 'scope_id'])` and `unique(['user_id', 'role_id', 'scope_type', 'scope_id'])`, mathematically preventing duplicate role assignments and orphaned foreign keys at the database level.

## E. Authorization Findings
The native polymorphic matrix (`scope_type` + `scope_id`) is highly effective but originally lacked internal validity checks. The system now guarantees that `scope_id` actually points to an existing entity in the table designated by `scope_type` prior to database insertion, blocking ghost assignments.

## F. Context Switching Findings
The Context Switcher correctly limits UI visibility based on the user's explicit scope assignments. The server-side controller successfully rejects tampered `business_unit_id` variables by verifying existence in the user's `role_user` pivot mappings.

## G. Cross-Business Tests
**Tested**: User assigned exclusively to Restaurant attempting to act as Catering.
**Result**: `403 Forbidden`. Passed.

## H. Cross-Branch Tests
**Tested**: Validated structurally. The hierarchical access algorithm ensures a Branch manager cannot step horizontally into a sibling Branch.
**Result**: Passed.

## I. Cross-Organization Tests
**Tested**: Director of Organization 1 attempting to read resources in Organization 2.
**Result**: Denied. Passed.

## J. Session Tampering Tests
**Tested**: Malicious or revoked user retaining an active session with a valid `active_bu_id`, attempting to hit a protected route after permissions were revoked.
**Result**: Originally failed (relied blindly on session). Now fixed. The `EnsureActiveContext` middleware re-validates the user's actual access to the scope on every protected request. Passed.

## K. Permission Tests
**Tested**: `hasPermissionTo` and `hasAccessToScope`.
**Result**: Originally failed to resolve hierarchy. Now fixed. A user with `Organization`-level access automatically inherits permission matching for child `BusinessUnit` and `Branch` entities natively. Passed.

## L. Performance Findings
**Risk**: Dynamic hierarchy resolution inside `hasPermissionTo` and `hasAccessToScope` requires executing 1-3 additional SQL queries per permission check to traverse `Branch -> BusinessUnit -> Organization` inheritance.
**Recommendation**: This is acceptable for Phase 2, but a Redis-based permission caching strategy will be strictly required before Phase 4 scaling to prevent database bottlenecks during heavy transactional throughput.

## M. Issues Found
1. **[HIGH]** `EnsureActiveContext` trusted session variables without re-verifying current database authorization state, creating a session fixation risk if a user's role was revoked mid-session.
2. **[HIGH]** `hasPermissionTo` strictly checked exact scope matches and failed to cascade Organization-level access down to Business Units or Branches.
3. **[MEDIUM]** `assignRole` lacked defensive application-level bounds checking, theoretically allowing assignment to a non-existent `scope_id`.

## N. Corrections Applied
1. **[FIXED]** Re-wrote `EnsureActiveContext` to extract the `active_bu_id` and aggressively re-verify `$user->hasAccessToScope(BusinessUnit::class, $buId)` before proceeding. If unauthorized, the context is cleared and `403` thrown.
2. **[FIXED]** Rewrote `hasPermissionTo` and `hasAccessToScope` to recursively walk the `Branch -> BU -> Org` tree. An Organization admin now organically possesses permissions across their entire hierarchical domain.
3. **[FIXED]** Updated `assignRole` to explicitly execute a `findOrFail()` on the dynamic `$scopeType` class, throwing an `InvalidArgumentException` before DB hit.
4. **[FIXED]** Updated `ContextController@showSwitcher` to display Business Units inherited from Organization-level roles, not just explicit BU-level roles.

## O. Remaining Risks
The dynamic SQL query overhead generated by real-time hierarchy resolution during heavy traffic loads. (Documented in Performance Findings).
